Ironwake

Naval combat from above, built for two thumbs on a phone. Drag along the bottom of the screen to slide your gunship from side to side; tap the sea and its two guns send shells arcing to that spot. Shells take a moment to land, so the skill is leading a moving ship — fire where it will be, not where it is. The enemy fires back: red rings mark where their shells will fall, torpedoes cut white lines towards you, and you slip out of the way between salvos. Patrol boats dart across, destroyers fire pairs, submarines surface to launch and dive again, gunboats stop to rain spreads on you, and every fifth wave a flagship arrives whose turrets have to be knocked out one by one. Land one shell among two ships for a double, and fish repair crates out of the water with a splash.

How Ironwake works

Your gunship sails the bottom of the screen. Drag anywhere in the band along the bottom and it slides left or right — the ship follows the move of your thumb, so your thumb never hides it. Tap anywhere on the sea above and the ship fires a shell at that spot; keep a finger held down and it keeps firing there as each gun is reloaded. The two bars at the bottom show the guns reloading.

A shell flies in an arc and lands a moment later, so aim ahead of a moving ship by the length of its run. A shell that lands among two ships at once hits both and pays double. Most ships take one hit; destroyers take several, shown as marks above them, and a submarine can only be hit while it is surfaced.

The enemy fires back. Every shell aimed at you is marked by a red ring where it will land, shrinking as it falls — be somewhere else by then; their gunners aim a little ahead of you, so changing direction is safer than running in a straight line. Torpedoes leave a white wake. You can take three hits. Repair crates float on the water; land a shell on one to fish it out and patch a hit. Every fifth wave a flagship arrives, and it sinks only when all four of its turrets are knocked out. Your best score is kept in this browser.

Tips for Ironwake

  • Aim in front of a moving ship. The further away it is, the further ahead you need to aim.
  • Use two thumbs: one in the bottom band to move, the other tapping the sea to fire.
  • Hold a finger on the sea and the guns keep firing there — good for a ship that has stopped.
  • Their gunners aim where you are heading. When a red ring appears, change direction instead of speeding on.
  • Wait for a submarine to surface before you fire; shells pass harmlessly over it while it is under.
  • Two ships close together? One shell between them sinks both for double points.
  • Shoot repair crates. A splash on one fishes it out and patches a hit.
