How the controls work

Every game here can be played with a keyboard or by touch, and 17 of them can be steered by tilting your phone. This page explains the parts that are not obvious.

Keyboard

Driving and flying games use ← → ↑ ↓ or W A S D, with Space or Shift on the extra pedal — handbrake, nitro or boost, depending on the game. Puzzles take clicks and numbers, and most of them add shortcuts: H for a hint, N for a new game, Ctrl+Z to undo, R to restart. The exact list for a game is on its own page under “How to play”.

While a game is running, the keys it uses stop scrolling the page, so an arrow press moves the car instead of the window. Press / anywhere on the site to jump to the search box.

Touch

  • Driving games put big pedals at the bottom corners and steering on the left, or you can tilt instead.
  • Runners take a swipe, and Roofline and Canyon Glide also let you hold the top or bottom half of the screen.
  • Wreck Arena and Marble Maze take a drag anywhere as a floating joystick.
  • Puzzles and card games are tap-sized: tap a cell, then a number; tap a card to send it where it belongs.
  • Minefield uses a long press to plant a flag, or a flag mode if you prefer taps.

Tilt steering

Tilt reads your phone’s motion sensor, so you steer by turning or tipping the phone. Hold it however is comfortable when the game starts: that grip counts as straight ahead. The buttons above the game do the rest:

  • ⟲ re-centres on your current grip — useful after you shift in your seat.
  • ◔ ◑ ◕ sets sensitivity: how far you have to lean for a full turn (Low 38°, Normal 28°, High 19°). The choice is remembered and used by every tilt game.
  • 📱 Tilt / ◀▶ Buttons switches between tilt and on-screen controls at any time.

On iPhone and iPad the browser asks once for permission to use motion — tap “Tap to steer by tilting” at the top of the game and allow it. If you declined by mistake, reopen the page or clear this site’s data and allow it when asked. Motion readings are used on the spot to steer and are never stored or sent anywhere.

Please play tilt games sitting or standing still — never while walking, cycling or driving.

Vibration, sound and fullscreen

  • 📳 Vibration under the game switches the buzz on impacts on or off for the whole site. It only appears on devices that can vibrate.
  • 🔊 Sound is per-site too, and no game needs sound to be played. Browsers keep audio silent until you tap once inside the game.
  • ⛶ Fullscreen fills the screen without stretching the picture, and on a phone it turns wide games sideways where the browser allows it. A hint under the game suggests rotating when a wide board is squeezed into an upright phone.

Games you can tilt

Look for the 📱 badge on a game card.

More on why they feel the way they do is in the tilt games collection, and the accessibility page covers what to do when a control is hard to use.
