Shatterline

A brick breaker built for a phone held upright. Slide your finger anywhere along the screen and the paddle follows it; tap to launch the ball. Where the ball meets the paddle decides where it flies, so you can aim at the last brick in the corner. The walls fight back as you climb: tough bricks take two or three hits, red blast bricks take their neighbours with them, and steel only gives way to a fireball. Broken bricks drop powers — three balls at once, a wide paddle, lasers, a fireball that ploughs straight through, a slower ball and the odd extra life — and a chain of bricks without touching the paddle multiplies the points. Every level is a new shape.

How Shatterline works

Keep the ball in play and break every brick. The paddle follows your finger along the bottom of the screen — you can touch anywhere, so your hand never hides the ball — and a tap launches a ball that is waiting on the paddle. Where the ball lands on the paddle sets its angle: near the middle it goes straight up, near an end it flies off at a sharp angle, which is how you reach a brick tucked in a corner.

Ordinary bricks break at a touch. Tough ones, outlined in dark, take two or three hits and show the hits left as dots. Red blast bricks go off and break every brick around them, steel turns the ball away until a fireball melts through it, and if a level stalls for long the steel starts to rust so the last brick can always be reached. A level is cleared when only steel is left.

About one brick in nine drops a power: three balls at once, a wide paddle, lasers that fire from the paddle, a fireball that ploughs through everything, a slower ball, and now and then an extra life. Bricks broken in a row without the ball touching the paddle build a multiplier up to eight times. You have three balls; every level is a new shape, a little faster than the last. Your best score is kept in this browser.

Tips for Shatterline

  • Hit the ball with the end of the paddle to send it out at an angle; the middle sends it straight back up.
  • Get the ball above the wall. Bouncing between the top and the bricks breaks a whole row without you touching it — and builds the multiplier.
  • Aim for the red blast bricks early: one hit clears the bricks around them too.
  • Do not chase every falling power. Watch the ball first and catch the power only if it is safe.
  • A fireball melts steel, so save the steel-lined corners for when you have one.
  • With three balls in play, follow the lowest one; the others can look after themselves for a moment.
  • The ball speeds up the longer a level lasts, so clear the easy bricks quickly and do not dawdle.
