Word Vault

One secret five-letter word a day, six guesses to find it. After each guess the tiles turn green for a right letter in the right place, yellow for a right letter in the wrong place, and grey for a miss. Keep your daily streak, see your guess distribution, share your spoiler-free result grid — and switch to Practice for unlimited words.

How Word Vault works

There is one five-letter word a day and six guesses to find it. Each guess has to be a real word; the tiles then tell you what you learned. Green means the letter is in the word and in that spot, yellow means it is in the word somewhere else, and grey means it is not in the word at all.

A good opening guess spends its five letters on common ones and does not repeat any — something with two or three vowels tells you the most. After that, use what the yellows rule out: a letter marked yellow is not in that position, so move it somewhere new rather than trying it again in place.

The daily word is the same for everybody and changes at midnight; practice mode gives you as many extra rounds as you like without touching your streak. Your streak, your best streak and how often each guess number finished the word are kept on your device.

Tips for Word Vault

  • Open with a word full of common letters and vowels to learn as much as possible.
  • Yellow letters are in the word but somewhere else. Try them in a new position next time.
  • Don't reuse grey letters. Every guess should test something new.
