⌨️ Left/Right or A/D — swing the shield
Arcade Action

Backfire

You are one core in a ring of turrets, with a single shield on a pivot and nothing else. Point the shield at an incoming bolt and it turns around at twice the speed, back to the turret that fired it — that is the only way to take one out. The shield swings with weight, so you commit to a side before the shot arrives and pay for guessing wrong. Catch a bolt on the middle of the shield and it is a perfect parry: double points, and a wave that turns back everything else closing in — which is the answer when two shots arrive at once. Purple bolts only turn on the bright centre; yellow ones split into a pair on the way back and can take out two turrets. Ticks around the shield show what is inbound and how close it is. Three hits on the core and the wave has you.

How Backfire works

You are the core in the middle of a ring of turrets, and all you have is one shield on a pivot. Point it at an incoming bolt and the bolt turns around at twice the speed it arrived, flying back to the rim — and a returned bolt is the only thing that destroys a turret. Clear every turret and the next wave rolls in, faster and with more of them.

The shield swings with weight rather than snapping into place, which is what makes the game a game: with bolts inbound from two sides you have to choose one and live with it — unless you catch one on the middle of the shield. That is a perfect parry: it pays double and throws out a wave that turns back every other bolt closing in, which is the way out of a squeeze. Two kinds need more than a quick flick. A purple bolt is heavy and only turns on the bright centre of the shield — catch it on the edge and it is merely knocked back before it comes again. A yellow bolt splits into a pair on its way home, so deflecting one where two turrets sit close together takes out both.

The core takes three hits. Every deflection in a row without being hit builds a multiplier up to five times, and clearing a wave pays a bonus that grows with the wave number, so the score rewards clean defence rather than survival alone. Your best is kept in this browser.

Tips for Backfire

  • Turn toward the shot that will arrive first, not the one that looks closest — a slow bolt from far away can wait.
  • The shield has weight. Start the swing early and let it arrive with the bolt rather than yanking it across at the last moment.
  • Purple bolts only turn on the white centre of the shield, so they need a proper aim, not a lucky edge.
  • Yellow bolts come back as a pair. Deflect one when two turrets are close together on the rim and both go.
  • Every deflection without being hit raises your multiplier, so a clean wave is worth several scrappy ones.
  • Catching a bolt on the middle of the shield is a perfect parry: double points and a wave that turns back everything near it. It is the only way out of two shots at once.
  • The ticks around the shield are the shots on their way in, and they grow as they close — read them instead of hunting for the bolts themselves.
